Senator Rand Paul believes more than 10 Republican senators will support the resolution to end Donald Trump's national emergency declaration
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) believes more than 10 Republicans senators will support the resolution to end Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration.
Paul said during a brief discussion with the press, “I will vote for the motion to disapprove of this. And I will continue to speak out. I do believe that there is at least 10 Republican “no” votes, possibly more.”
Senator Rand Paul joined Senators Susan Collins (ME), Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Thom Tillis (NC) in giving the senate Democrats the votes needed in order to pass the joint resolution, which was passed in the House on a vote of 245-182.
The Senate is expected to vote on the resolution by next Friday, March 15, 2019, before their next recess. Donald Trump will veto the resolution which can only be overridden by two-thirds votes in the House and the Senate.
There are a total of 432 members in the House with the Democrats having 235 members to the Republicans 197 members.
This means that 54 Republicans must join the Democrats in order to give them the 289 votes needed to override Trump’s veto in the House.
If that occurs, the bill will then move over to the Senate where there are 53 Republicans to 45 Democrats and 2 Independents who often vote with the Democrats.
Let’s say everything remains as is and the 45 Democrats, 2 Independents, plus the 4 Republicans vote to override Trump’s veto.
With that scenario, 16 more Republicans will have to vote with the 45 Democrats, 2 Independents, and 4 Republicans in order to provide the 67 votes needed to override a presidential veto.
Easier said than done because each individual member has to deal with loyalty to his/her party and not wanting to upset his/her base who may decide to give their vote to someone who will not vote against the president they support.
Politics, it sucks most of the time.
